POST DOC DEPARTMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY
- Location: Amsterdam
- 36 hours
- Closing date: October 23th 2019
- Apply online
Are you interested in antibody biology (including B cells), Fc-receptor, and molecular mechanisms of diseases? Would you like to play a key-role in setting up cutting-edge research that can be applied for future live-saving diagnostics? In this basic-research project you will be translating knowledge generated in our laboratory, working in a proliferative research environment while interacting Diagnostics and Reagents-parts of Sanquin.
Sanquin is a knowledge-driven not-for-profit organization that supplies life-saving products and services, as well as involved in blood transfusion medicine- and immunology- related research. The research is performed by a dedicated staff and it is focused around five medical needs: 1. Anemia, 2. Bleeding and Hemostasis, 3. Cancer, 4. Immune deficiency and Aging, 5. Vascular and Inflammatory diseases. Sanquin’s research portfolio is divided into strategic research (ranging from basic to applied and clinical research) and product- and process development. In this project we are looking for a motivated post-doctoral fellow generating tools to detect signs of dangerous antibodies with altered glycosylation generated sometimes in pregnancies against fetal blood cells creating life-threatening situation for the unborn fetus.
The immunoglobulin research laboratory
You will be based in the Department of Experimental Immunohematology studying mostly immune responses against blood cells. The work will take within the Immunoglobulin research laboratory within the department where we focus on immunoglobulin biology (mostly IgG) in the context of their receptors and other effector molecules.
What you will do
A few years ago we discovered that N-linked glycosylation of IgG-antibodies is a crucial ingredient in antibody responses against blood cells. Changes, in particular fucosylation, of a a highly conserved glycosylation site can alter Fc-gamma-Receptor affinity by more than 40 fold, and result in either non-functional or highly active antibody. You job will be to translate our current findings into a simple test that can be used for diagnostics. As a post-doc you have the chance to interact with various PhD-students, technicians and senior scientists at all levels within the organization. We offer a challenging research topic that can be tackled with state of the art technologies on a multidisciplinary level. It will include, but not be limited by, protein- and glycoengineering, molecular biology, RNA-Seq, mass-spectrometry, and FACS.
- enthusiastic candidate with PhD-degree in a relevant field (e.g. Immunology or molecular biology. Experience with RNA-Seq- and/or Mass spectrometry setup/data-handling is a pre);
- interest and background in clinical Immunology and advanced Molecular Biology;
- an independent scientist that can function well as part of a team;
- good knowledge of spoken and written English is required.
- challenging project in a multi-disciplinary and enthusiastic international team;
- temporary position (project duration of 3 years);
- salary and conditions are conform CAO Sanquin;
- 8,33% end-of-year bonus; i.e. a thirteenth month in case of full-year employment;
- partial reimbursement of travel costs;
- pension plan with Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn (PFZW);
- at fulltime employment (36 hours) 201 hours of leave per annum.
