Are you looking for an exciting research project where you get to combine clinical research on acute stroke, molecular biology and polymer synthesis for the development of diagnostic devices? Then we would like to meet you!

PhD STUDENT IN SURGERY AND NEUROLOGY

  • 36 hours per week
  • Closing date: 25 October 2020
  • Salary: max. € 3,196.

Your position in short

  • You have completed a bachelor’s ánd master’s degree in Molecular Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, Life Science and Technology, Technical Medicine, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy, or similar (e.g. Biomedical Sciences with chemically oriented internships)
  • You will work at both the Leiden University Medical Center (clinical research and molecular biology) and Delft University of Technology (polymer synthesis for the development of diagnostic devices)
  • You finalize the project with a PhD

What you do

As a PhD student at the departments of Surgery and Neurology of the LUMC and the department of Chemical Engineering at TU Delft, you will perform research aimed at the development of so-called point-of-care devices for rapid diagnosis of acute stroke. Acute stroke is caused by either a cerebral infarction or an intracranial hemorrhage; the symptoms are the same, but the causes are different. Stroke treatment cannot be started until the correct diagnosis has been confirmed. In this project, you will use a combination of patient inclusions, clinical sample processing and molecular biological research to identify and characterize biomarkers specific to the different types of acute stroke. You will also develop innovative detection methods for these biomarkers based on polymer chemistry.

What we ask

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague with a completed bachelor’s ánd master’s degree in Molecular Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Life Science and Technology, Technical Medicine, Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy, or similar. You have demonstrable experience with chemical synthesis, polymer chemistry and / or organic chemistry. Of course you are interested in clinical research and you are able to discuss study participation (informed consent) with critically ill patients and / or their immediate family.

Your workplace

The project will be carried out in collaboration between the Surgery and Neurology departments of the LUMC and the Chemical Engineering department of Delft University of Technology. Both institutions are excellent research and training centers with an excellent international reputation. The travel distance between both institutions is approximately thirty minutes. The working time will be divided roughly equally between both institutions, but the PhD will be obtained from Leiden University.

Your career at the LUMC

The research project will be concluded with a PhD. This training offers access to a scientific career, but also to a career outside academia. During the program, there is the possibility to follow various courses to give direction to your personal development.

We offer

A full work week is 36 hours. The salary starts with € 2,495 gross per month in the first year, rising to € 3,196 gross per month in the fourth year (scale OIO, Collective Labor Agreement UMC).
