AI for risk stratification in coronary heart disease using cardiac ultrasound
- 36 hours per week
- Apply before: 2 February 2021
What you are going to do
Two-thirds of all cardiac patients suffer from coronary heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cardiac ultrasound is the most widely used diagnostic test in cardiology, which provides a wealth of information about the heart. It is the first choice imaging tool for the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with coronary heart disease. However, acquiring images with high diagnostic quality and their accurate interpretation require highly specialized expertise. Especially, identification of patients who are at risk of major adverse cardiac events, such as heart infarction or death, and therefore, require intervention is highly challenging. Hence, the aim of this project is to develop AI algorithms for analysis of cardiac ultrasound images and available patient data for better prediction of patients at risk of major adverse cardiac events.
What we expect from you
We are looking for an excellent candidate with an MSc degree in biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, computer science, image sciences or a comparable training, with a strong interest in medical image processing and analysis. The candidate must have a good scientific background, should be highly motivated and independent, and able to work in an interdisciplinary team of medical doctors and engineers. Programing experience is required.
Where you are going to work
The Amsterdam UMC is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and one of the prominent research institutes. The department of Biomedical Engineering & Physics and the department of Cardiology individually participate in numerous international research projects and studies. This PhD project will be embedded in the Department of Biomedical Engineering & Physics at the subdivision of Medical Imaging. Image analysis researchers at the Department of Biomedical Engineering & Physics have ample experience in the development and validation of AI image analysis methods with a strong track record in cardiovascular imaging research. You will be embedded in the group of PhD students and PostDocs developing AI methods for quantitative analysis of medical images and signals. Moreover, you will very closely collaborate with researchers from the Departments Cardiology who will provide medical expertise required in the development of clinically applicable AI methods.
